I could dig it out by myself, I would need (besides the authorization) a pick and a shovel. After all, the bunker is only covered with the sandy ground on which all Berlin lies.

The author just scratches the surface of the issues that really matter (is forward basing a harm or benefit). Mr. Vine is on the right path, but meanders around subjects and throw in third rate references and stories, then reference them again and again, as if they mean something. Throughout the book there are references to speeches by sergeants, majors, and lieutenant colonels with no clear idea of their title or position. Any one who has spent more than a day or two around the military knows that rarely are sergeants, majors, or lieutenant colonels privy to or able to discuss the types of details in the book with any type of authority.Mr. Vine has an impressive amount of research which one day will translate into a great story about the life cycle of US bases in the 20th and 21st centuries. However, he's wasted this voluminous amount of data on an amateurish work that jumps from subject to subject without clearly answering or defining what he's doing. In the final chapter he tries to wrap it all up with a nice thesis statement, but it falls apart because the book was not written that way. It's really a bunch of stories of varying relevancy about US bases with many pointless stories in between. He has several real gems hidden in the book, but they are not brought to light, but glossed over.The other major blind spot of this book is the failure to include any real information or data from the nations that host US bases abroad. He could have easily tapped into the German, Korean, Philippines, Japanese, or Panamanian government or other primary sources for their studies of what happens when the US military departs an area. Each country has experienced a mass departure of US forces int the past 25 years and there are reams of data in each country looking up, down and sideways and the problem.. I applaud him for the effort, but the book needs more structure and the other side of the coin needs to be explored to make this book of value for future academics, sociologist, government bureaucrats, and those who study the military.

Excellent reading, very detailed work by David Vine on what the USA is doing around the world and how much damage is causing in the name of homeland security and the incredible amount of. money is costing the taxpayers. I think everybody should read this book to understand why so many people around the world has a distaste for American foreign policy.

Cryptonomicon zooms all over the world, careening conspiratorially back and forth between two time periods--World War II and the present. Our 1940s heroes are the brilliant mathematician Lawrence Waterhouse, cryptanalyst extraordinaire, and gung ho, morphine-addicted marine Bobby Shaftoe. They're part of Detachment 2702, an Allied group trying to break Axis communication codes while simultaneously preventing the enemy from figuring out that their codes have been broken. Their job boils down to layer upon layer of deception. Dr. Alan Turing is also a member of 2702, and he explains the unit's strange workings to Waterhouse. "When we want to sink a convoy, we send out an observation plane first.... Of course, to observe is not its real duty--we already know exactly where the convoy is. Its real duty is to be observed.... Then, when we come round and sink them, the Germans will not find it suspicious."

All of this secrecy resonates in the present-day story line, in which the grandchildren of the WWII heroes--inimitable programming geek Randy Waterhouse and the lovely and powerful Amy Shaftoe--team up to help create an offshore data haven in Southeast Asia and maybe uncover some gold once destined for Nazi coffers. To top off the paranoiac tone of the book, the mysterious Enoch Root, key member of Detachment 2702 and the Societas Eruditorum, pops up with an unbreakable encryption scheme left over from WWII to befuddle the 1990s protagonists with conspiratorial ties.

Cryptonomicon is vintage Stephenson from start to finish: short on plot, but long on detail so precise it's exhausting. Every page has a math problem, a quotable in-joke, an amazing idea, or a bit of sharp prose. Cryptonomicon is also packed with truly weird characters, funky tech, and crypto--all the crypto you'll ever need, in fact, not to mention all the computer jargon of the moment. Stephenson follows his startlingly original Snow Crash (1992) and The Diamond Age (1995) with proof that he can do as well at twice the page-count, and not only that, but with the promise that this immense volume begins a saga that may rival Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time in its eventual proportions. Volume one, then, is the well-told tale of a World War II code breaker whose descendants end up trying to track down the secrets of the Third Reich's cryptographers--secrets that may liberate or ruin the cybertech world of the present day. Stephenson mixes historical and contemporary settings, handling both with great skill, as he presents a large cast of vividly imagined characters, notably including the original code breaker's granddaughter, and makes both the tale's technology and its conspiracies highly believable. His choice to tell the entire story in the present tense rather calls attention to itself, and, given a book nearly 1,000 pages long, every word is not really essential. Still, this is a book that should be bought for the sake of saying that you have it and read, however long that takes, for the pleasure and intellectual stimulation it is likely to give to most readers.
