I guess I'm glad to have it, but I was hoping for something a bit better.It deliberately limits itself to things the author believes no harder than the Bach Three-Part Inventions or Beethoven Op 49. It also largely avoids transcriptions. The text tends to be about as succinct as that in Hinson, and thus just as frustrating: a little more detail, even if opinionated, often would be welcome. It also mostly limits itself to things in print at the time of its publication over twenty years ago. With the rise of the web and IMSLP this is an unfortunate limitation for things published in past centuries; and, of course, it necessarily omits the wonderful resources now published electronically directly by composers.On the good side, I think there is a serious, and welcome, effort to include some pretty obscure things, particularly relatively easy ones. I'm pretty sure there are things in here I've not seen cited elsewhere. And it shows considerable respect to some valuable, easy pieces that aren’t profound enough to get much play in most other reference works. Again, it is over twenty years old, though, so nothing really recent, nor reflecting recent revisions of taste, are included.It does have an oddly hit or miss quality in some cases. For example, only a few of the Mompou Cancion e Danza and Impressiones Intimas are mentioned, though I’m pretty sure many of those neglected are still in the difficulty range covered.As a physical object it is substandard: it is feebly bound and pages were coming out within an hour of my first opening it. This is particular frustrating in a reference work.On balance, I guess I’d categorize it as a good start, but it could benefit tremendously from a thorough revision and updating. Though perhaps in this day and age such a revision would be better as a living on-line resource rather than as a static book.

I’ve had a couple of copies of this book over the past decade. The first time it was required reading for a pedagogy class so I bought it. However I didn’t find myself using it, and re-sold it on Amazon.Years later, a couple of colleagues highly recommended it so I thought perhaps I’d missed something so I gave it another shot.This book is useless unless the wide variety of your students have mastered all known standard repertoire and you are looking for less obscure gems for your students to tackle. The reality is, our students struggle to practice the things we give them, let alone the hundreds and thousands of obscure pieces that this book so painstakingly lists.But let’s assume I really did want to venture out and try some hidden gems. The book is organized in such a way that you have to already know what you are looking for. Repertoire is listed by time period and in alphabetical order of the composer, not by leveling. So, if you are looking for say, a level 2 piece, you’d have to dig around for quite some time, to find random level 2 pieces scattered throughout the book. You wouldn’t be familiar with the piece or composer, then you might search on IMSLP to see if it’s on public domain to ascertain whether it’s truly appropriate. That is a time drain.I don’t understand why the author went through the trouble of creating this anthology, and then not have it be user friendly.I have it on my bookshelf but again, it’s larely unused. The average piano teacher could simply use a classical anthology such as Keith Snell’s essential repertoire. And it takes the guess work out of leveling.I think this book is useful if you are considering specific pieces, and want to see what is written as far as pedagogical “watch out for octaves; not best for small hands” type of feedback. Even then I found descriptions to be descriptive yet vague enough that I still need to do further research. For example, I was interested in assigning a student Heller etudes. The ones listed aren’t necessarily the best ones in my opinion, and that’s just one example.

This guide does a wonderful job of covering both the teaching and performance literatures for the beginning to early advanced piano student. It covers Baroque, Classical, Romantic and 20th century periods. The 20th century section is especially thorough, taking up over half of the book. Pieces are described concisely, with technical and musical challenges of individual pieces briefly but insightfully pointed out. The grading system of 1-10 seems to be well thought out and consistently applied. To give a feel for the coverage, the most difficult works, given a grade of 10, include many of Bach's 3-part inventions, the Beethoven Op. 49 1,2 piano sonatas, the Mozart Op. 331 sonata (w/ the Alla turca finale), the Chopin 'Military' polonaise, and Debussy's 'Clair de lune.' Virtuoso works such as the more difficult Beethoven sonatas or the Chopin etudes are not covered. (For excellent coverage of more advanced literature see Hinson's 'Guide to the Pianist's Repertoire', in the new 4th Ed.) A feature that I like is that detailed coverage of teaching pieces is given. E.g., some order is brought to the dizzying array of Czerny's many teaching opuses, and many Burgmuller etudes are described and graded individually. Hopefully this fine work will be updated, as the only real drawback seems to be that important but more recent composers like Robert Vandall are not covered. Highly recommended.

During and after my internship, I worked as a house physician in the departments of medicine, surgery, gynecology and pediatrics at the Ayurvedic Hospital in Pune. At that time I observed repeatedly how correct diet, combined with proper herbal medicine and lifestyle, can play a vital role in healing. I became increasingly aware that illness provides an "invitation" to change oneÂ’s habitual patterns. As my awareness grew about the role of food as medicine, I observed that many health problems seemed intertwined with the stresses of daily life. These include worries about oneÂ’s job or money, tension and even the stress created by eating the wrong kinds of food and improper food combining. In the last twenty years I have seen many problems, sometimes culminating in serious illness, that were the result of poor food choices and ignorance of the art of proper cooking for oneself and for the family. In this book you will find simple, practical approaches to food and specific recipes from the Ayurvedic art of cooking to help restore the bodyÂ’s healthful balance. Though there is much helpful information within these covers, this book is not proposed as a treatment plan for any disease. This, of course, you must obtain from your own doctor. I met my wife Usha at the Ayurvedic Hospital in Pune where she was a student of Ayurvedic nursing. I bought this book because I found several references to it in the "The complete book of Ayurvedic Home remedies" written by the same Author. The book itself looks vey beautiful with hard cover and good quality pages filled with vibrant colorful pictures. So far I have tried most of the recipes in this book. They are pretty easy to follow and the food turns out to be flavorful. Best part is that most of the recipes are Tridoshic (suitable for all individuals). Some of the recipes have tips at the end, if a certain ingredient should be used less/ more or skipped by individuals with certain constitution.Some of the recipes are similar to what I grew up eating (I am from India) but after reading this book I got insight into the selection of ingredients in various recipes. In some recipes I prefer to use less amount of Ghee (Clarified butter) than what is stated (which i found to be a bit excessive). The book also has a chart that helps you to determine the constitution of your body and several other charts that list the kind of food suitable/ not suitable for various constitutions. In general I liked the book.Why only 4 stars?So there are two formats of this book - one is paperback without colorful pictures and this one (hardback with colorful pictures).I found that most of the recipes would not result into the food shown in the picture alongside the recipe. I mean the upma recipe has the picture of upma. But the recipe/ ingredient used for the food in the picture is different than the recipe listed in this book. So for a novice in Ayurvedic or Indian cooking this might be confusing. Like, one might wonder - Even though I followed the recipe to the Tee, why my food looks different from what is shown in the picture? Also some of the recipes do not have a picture at all. I can understand certain teas and Ayurvedic milk not being pictured since they all would look more or less same, but certain vegetable and rice preparations also have no pictures. I know this is a very minor point but for a book that is advertised as "hardcover edition! Illustrated with delectable photographs of the recipes throughout the book", I believe it would be better to have real pictures instead of some look alike.Should you buy this book?Yes sure! Other than some of the missing or misleading pictures the book is really good and looks beautiful. If you are Ok with that please go for it.. On the other hand, if you only care for the recipes then there is a cheaper version (Paperback) of this book available on Amazon.Please hit the like button if you found this review useful. Dr. Vasant Lad is one of the truly great Indian-American Ayurvedic doctors alive today. He and his wife, Usha Lad, also trained in Ayurveda have created a much-needed practical guide. Not only with dozens of tasty and easy recipes for every day, but also with handy charts of foods to avoid and favor for each Dosha. Moreover, the appendices also contain very helpful discussions of every day vegetables, fruits and spices and their medicinal properties and uses. I have found that to be extremely helpful. For example, in the pages of this book I discovered simple cure for chronic skin inflammation which included coconut water and watermelon water.I wish all those who have an interest in becoming truly healthy in body and mind to take this ancient science as far as it goes; not only by healthy eating at the appropriate times of day and for their unique physical and emotional constitution, but to the very core of each cell. Ayurveda’s true purpose is to enliven the body's inner intelligence for self-healing, bring us closer to the cosmic consciousness which pervades all life, and achieve the true happiness and health that is our divine right.

Very clear. Lists alterations for different Dosha's. So much variety in types of meals...from soups to drinks...to dishes I have never heard of but can't wait to try. It's new and different to the way I've eaten over my life so I'm excited to taste new flavors.

Gorgeous book with very good recipes. The author cautions the reader that he wrote the recipes using a light hand with the spices and that you may want to increase the spicing. The first recipe I tried I followed the recipe. It wasn't spicy enough for me so I increased the spices after that til I found the right amount for me. The author includes charts that show you what foods are best for your dominant body type ( vata, pitta or kapha ). The author created the Ayurvedic Institute in New Mexico and teaches both there and in India.

The Ayurvedic Cookbook for Self Healing is a TRUE Gem! My family and I are new to Ayurvedic cooking & lifestyle, so this has been a real find for us...the recipes are very detailed and specific, advising which are tri-doshic and if the recipe favors a dosha, that is also noted, as well as comments as to whether a different dosha should be limited in their intake of certain spices. The back also has a fabulous listing for all 3 doshas, and breaks down the best/worst foods and ingredients for that body type, so I can find the ingredients that work for all of us and cook with those recipes. The specific recipes also are well written and detailed (I am not a great cook, just average - but my first Ayurvedic meal at home was fantastic, thanks to the work of the Vads!)I am using the recipes and suggestions in the book daily and recommend it anyone - beginner or experienced Ayurvedic cook, for great recipes and food

This is the perfect book if you want to learn how to heal yourself through eating. Food is medicine or food is poison. Stop eating poison and learn to eat medicine. Other reviews are saying this is just an average book on ayurvedic cooking. If you want really complex, super tasty dishes that will only satisfy an Americans extravagant taste buds, then they might be right. But this book is all you need to know to cook "balanced" ayurvedic meals that will heal you. I also recommend The complete book of ayurvedic home remedies by Dr. Vasant Lad.

A friend of mine has this book and kept giving me recipes that healed me every time i became ill with something a regular doctor would say " drink fluids and wait it out". So i finally bought the book. It is nothing short of incredible, not just for time tested remedies, but also for daily recipes that can optimize your functioning.
