From School Library Journal
PreSchool-K. An endearing bear, with all of the stubbornness, imagination, and logic of a preschooler, argues with his parents as they use every trick in the book to convince him that he should brush his teeth. Finally, when he sneaks away from Papa Bear and starts to make a mess in the kitchen, all patience is abandoned. "Brush!" roars Papa?and Little Bear does. The next morning Mama uses Little Bear's penchant for pretending to enlist her son in the "battle" against bacteria, telling him he must fight it every day, and the cub finally agrees. Typical of many preschoolers' battles, this story will strike a familiar chord with readers. The soft-hued, comforting illustrations depict a family of round, cuddly bears. One double-page spread that shows close-ups of the bacteria as hairy, green monsters using axes, ladders, and ropes to attack teeth may strike some as a bit over-the-top. Nonetheless, this nicely told tale will entertain both young listeners and their parents.?Jane Marino, Scarsdale Public Library,

Little Bear Brushes His Teeth (PLB $14.90; paper $8.95; Mar. 1997; 32 pp.; PLB 0-7613-0190-9; paper 0-7613-0230-1): Little Bear is not happy about his first encounter with toothbrushes and paste: ``Blech! Ptooey! This is horrible!'' He fancies himself a soldier, who doesn't need to brush anyway. When the mother's entreaties don't work, the father is enlisted, but he succeeds only by roaring. A lightbulb clicks on in Mama Bear's head: Why not depict bacteria as an army battling Little Bear's teeth? ``Pass me my sword,'' commands Little Bear. Using a hook to overcome life's early trials makes this book a stronger effort than the companion volume, Little Bear Goes to Kindergarten (0-7613-0231-X), which relies on trickery. Sobat's warm artwork adds a comforting touch. (Picture book. 3-5) -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
